Healing and Wellness Program

Ensures that the healing and wellness needs of the Aboriginal community are addresssed by implementing the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy at the local level in order to reduce family violence, promote healthy lifestyles, culture-based programming, and healing. This is accomplished by the following:

  • UNFC Food Shelf
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Rainy River Valley HIV/AIDS Committee
  • Rainy River Family Violence Network

Assist Anishinabe people, status, non-status, metis or inuit; by promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy alternatives.

Program Goal
To ensure that the healing and wellness needs of the Aboriginal community are addressed by implementing the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy at the local level in order to reduce family violence, promote healthy lifestyles, culture based programming and healing.

Program Objectives
-Take a preventative approach to family violence.
-Facilitate the positive re-establishment of families.
-Participate in the development and establishment of culturally sensitive services which address family healing and wellness.
-To facilitate the understanding and support of community agencies for the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy.
-To establish a system of referrals.

These objectives will be met through the involvement of elders and traditional people, who have undergone their own healing and wellness journey and through the facilitation of community events which promote healing and wellness, addictions free activities, positive parenting, family interaction and cultural awareness.

This program aims to improve the quality of life for native people in the urban environment by supporting and promoting Aboriginal culture-based family healing and wellness.

Program Activities

  • Visit area hospitals and Homes for the Aged, to address need or service gaps the residents may have.
  • To promote healthy lifestyles by conducting home visits, healing circles, workshops, seminars and public education forums.
  • To know of and work with community agencies to support healthy Aboriginal Families.
  • To promote violence free lifestyles.
  • To initiate activities which will lead to healthy families and lifestyles.
  • To facilitate community events to promote healing, wellness, addiction free activities, positive parenting, family interaction and cultural awareness.
